Lasik Surgery Candidates

Some people aren’t right for Lasik… Are a you candidate for Lasik? There are certain factors that make Lasik work better for people than other procedures. Some factors are all but required for a good outcome. Look at the following and find out more:

Your eyes must be very healthy. If you presently have any condition that may affect how your natural eyes respond to surgery or might heal afterwards, you need to wait until that condition is totally resolved. Examples are of this are chronic dry eyes, condition conjunctivitis and any other injury. Some of these conditions, such as eye cataracts that interfere with your normal vision, keratoconus and then uncontrolled glaucoma, may also  disqualify you then completely. There are Lasik alternatives however.

You must be over 18. By law, certain there are procedures requiring you to be 18; others, at least 21. Younger patients may be treated as an exception.

You need to have very stable vision for at least a year. Of course, many young adults do experience changes in their eyeglass prescriptions and contact lens prescriptions in their formative teenage years. Vision then stabilizes the most often then sometime in their 20s. Usually, it’s the nearsightedness that gradually becoming worse, but there may also be other ocular changes as well. They are not very good candidates until their normal eyes have "settled down" into a solid prescription. Your eye doctor can tell you whether your eye prescription is stable. Again, there are other Lasik alternatives which may be helpful.

If you are pregnant Lasik is not an option, certain hormonal fluctuation changes will then cause the fluid levels in your normal body to rise. This will change the new shape of your eyes corneas, leading to new changes in your eye vision. Surgery should not be well performed until your new hormones and eye vision have "normalized" after your pregnancy. This could perhaps take a few weeks or months. Dry eyes are very often seen in pregnant women too, and as mentioned in the text above, you should of course postpone LASIK until your actual eyes are healthier. In addition, there are some medications that would normally be well used before, during or after surgery to help promote healing (like antibiotics and steroids) that may be risky for your new baby, whether unborn or in nursing stage.

Remember, if any of these preclude you from Lasik, there may be other options for you that will actually work as well, if not better. Find a specialized doctor here to help you make the right choice.
